Virginia Barrett holds a Master's in Teaching Art from The Rhode Island School of Design and a B.A. in English Literature, from the University of Virginia. She has been teaching visual art, poetry, and combined curriculums in San Francisco schools for over 15 years. She is the editor of Feather Floating on the Water—poems for our children, an anthology of contemporary San Francisco poets. After a successful fundraising campaign, copies of the book were distributed free of charge to all the San Francisco public elementary and middle schools, as well as to all the San Francisco public libraries. The book includes an appendix of lesson plans for parents and teachers, based on poems in the book and designed by Virginia.

For nine years Virginia was the Head of the Art Department at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School in Colorado. As a poet, writer, and a visual artist, Virginia often combines literary elements with her visual work. Her most recent books of poetry are: I Just Wear My Wings—collected poems of an aspiring mystic, and Singing My Naked Lines—North Beach poems. An avid traveler, Virginia has lived in several countries including Zimbabwe and Mexico and loves sharing her cultural experiences with her students. Virginia is a certified yoga and meditation instructor; she strives to bring a soothing, yet highly engaging energy to the classroom. She also plays the Native American flute to begin her classes with a calming effect.
